If you’re reading this, you’re probably the kind of person that’s conscientious about your health. As such, you might be the kind of person to normally avoid indulging in too many sweets. However, when Halloween comes around, it might seem like sugar is absolutely impossible to avoid.

It could be necessary to take on a more deliberate approach in order to avoid candy for the sake of your physical, and oral, health. Here are a few tips to help you stave off a sweet tooth this time of year.

Put a Diet on Pause

It may sound a little bit counterintuitive, but if you’re really struggling to avoid candy this time of year, you may need to actually take a look at whether you’re getting enough calories in general. October is a rough time to be on a diet, because if you have cravings that you can’t fully control, the first thing you’ll reach for will be Halloween candy.

You may want to take a bit of a break from your diet until Halloween is over or allow yourself some things that you wouldn’t ordinarily eat that are still better for you than candy.

Pick Your Sweets

Sometimes, nothing will do but a little bit of sugar. When that happens, however, you can still be a little bit picky about what you eat.

Instead of chocolate or gummies, try having some fruit. Apples, grapes, figs, and guava are all in their peak season in the fall, so you can get fresh fruit that may be even better than Halloween candy.

Eat Filling Meals

After eating certain meals, it’s hard to resist reaching for candy for dessert. This is especially the case after starchy, carb-rich meals like pasta. Make sure to incorporate protein, vegetables, and plenty of other filling foods into your meals so that you won’t have room when you’re done.
