Seventy-seven years ago, about two hours away from our dentist Polaris area patients call home, celebrating children\u2019s dental health began.\u00a0 On February 3, 1941 a Cleveland dentist office promoted oral health care for children.\u00a0 The concept then grew nationally from a single day, to a week, until the 80\u2019s when it became a month-long recognized tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
National Children\u2019s Dental Health Month is a time in which those in the dental industry promote the importance of oral health for children. Early introduction into caring for young teeth not only establishes a sound foundation that will grow with your child, but also keeps their mouths and bodies healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides visiting the dentist with your child every 6 months, good oral health starts at home. Gently brushing your baby\u2019s gums with dental wipes eases pain when teething and rids the mouth of bacteria. As teeth emerge a proper, soft-bristled toothbrush can be introduced. When applicable, your child may want to brush their own teeth as they being to experiment with independence. This helps them work on their fine motor skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is important to note, however, that children are still learning and fine-tuning their movements. Allow your child to brush and floss, but find a fun way to be included in the regimen. Pretend to be the dentist when they complete their own brushing and brush their teeth again so to be sure the teeth get clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no short supply of children\u2019s books, songs, videos, and apps that cover oral hygiene. Find a method that is appropriate for your child\u2019s age and holds their attention. Learn a song about brushing so your child begins to understand how long you should brush your teeth. Digital technology has even given us interactive apps that focus on oral health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
